How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump
